Web hosting overview:

Shared web hosting (also knows as virtual web hosting or just virtual hosting) is the most common service provided by web hosting firms. On shared hosting, one server hosts many different websites, typically sharing a single IP address. Each website has it's own individual hosting account and security, however it shares the hardware and software resources with the other websites on the same server. This sharing of resources allows the hosting company to charge very low subscription rates, making shared website hosting a good option for most small businesses.

A dedicated server is simply a computer in which all of the computing resources are allocated (or dedicated) to a single client. Very large websites or websites which have very high traffic require a powerful hosting server to operate normally, One way to assure this is by using a server where all the hardware and software is used by only one client.

A cluster server (also known as a cloud server) is multiple dedicated servers connected and configured to perform as one 'super-server'. The website load balance is distributed across multiple servers, thereby allowing for an enhanced level of performance. Cluster servers are typically used to host proprietary networks or very high traffic websites.

Standard Shared Hosting

from $299 per year

- 1GB storage
- 3GB bandwidth
- 1 domain
- 10 email boxes
- 5 mySQL databases

Shared web hosting defined

Shared web hosting is one of the many types of hosting. In a shared hosting environment, many different clients share the same server and the same resources. While each client has their own limits on certain things (storage space, allowed email accounts, allowed bandwidth per month, allowed FTP accounts), the same Apache server, MySQL server, and even physical memory are shared.

What are the advantages of shared hosting?

While it may sound like sharing resources with other clients could be a disadvantage, shared hosting is a popular, economical and resourceful solution for many clients. Because you are sharing resources, it's possible to use the server's hardware and resources to it's full potential, translating into affordable web hosting for the client.

Another advantage to shared web hosting is that the client is responsible for little, if any, server maintanence or management.

Is shared hosting right for my needs?

Because of the limited resources and economical price of a shared web hosting plan, it is often the first place people look when they are looking to get started with hosting. Shared web hosting is often a good place to start, especially when you are unsure of exactly what your needs are, how many visitors you will get or how much storage space you need. With a shared web hosting account, you can start out slow, and upgrade your hosting plan to meet your needs as they arise. As your website's traffic grows, performance may begin to suffer. In order to maintain performance, your web server may require an upgrade. Ecommerce websites will benefit from such an upgrade. Heavy traffic websites may need a Dedicated Server. For the "money is no object" best performance, a managed Load Balanced Cluster Server is the latest advancement in web hosting technology.

Dedicated hosting

from: $1748 per year
  • - Intel Celeron, Pentium and Xeon Processors
  • - 80 GB to 300 GB HDDs
  • - RAID configurations available

The power and flexibility of a dedicated server puts you in control of your website's performance and scalability. One entire web server solely for your own use, allows for the greatest flexibility and power, and is best suited to large and/or specialized websites.

Load Balanced Cluster hosting

from: $6680 per year
  • - 2000 GB Bandwidth
  • - Dell PE1425 Dual Xeon (2 x 3.2 Ghz) processors
  • - 2GB Server RAM memory
  • - 2 x 160 GB SATA-II (RAID 1) storage

A Load Balanced Server Cluster is multiple servers inter-connected to perform as one super-server. Cluster servers are a system of two or more servers (also called nodes) that act cooperatively to deal with heavy traffic and/or heavy resource usage. This allows traffic going to just one website (or a collection of sites) to be handled by more than one server.

The cluster hosting plans include one database / file server which provides file storage and database services for the cluster. The plans then include one or more web nodes which act as the "face" to the users accessing your website and receive the inbound traffic as managable chunks that are easier to deal with for a busy site.

Web hosting Defined

A simple definition of web hosting is a service that provides, at a minimum, storage space on a server (specialized computer) and bandwidth which allows the data (web pages, images, etc) stored on this server to be transferred to anyone viewing the data.

A more pragmatic definition is that web hosting is a service that provides your web site with a connection to the Internet via a web server and high speed internet connection. Your web content is then accessible from anywhere in the world. Renting space on a web server is much like renting an apartment. The monthly fee provides you with space on a web server but the up-keep of the server is the responsibility of the owner of that server.

Web hosts exist to provide a bundle of services that make publishing on the Internet possible. Web hosts combine many services logically into a single package at a reasonable price. These services typically include:

  • Storage space · The physical disk space on a server where your website data (pages, images, scripts, e-mails etc) is stored
  • Bandwidth · The Internet traffic and the networking infrastructure needed to deliver the traffic to users of your website
  • E-mail accounts · E-mail boxes where you can send and receive e-mail. Often many other e-mail service variations are provided as well
  • Technical support · A staff of support technicians to help you with general service usage issues and other problems as they arise
  • Scripting support · The ability to run scripts (small programs that perform certain tasks) on the server
  • Backup services · A service that makes a copy of your website data in case of accidental deletion or other emergency situation

The above list covers most of the basic features that can be expected from most web hosting firms, however many offer a wide array of services to provide the best user experience possible.

Types of Web Hosting

There are several types of web hosting plans to choose from depending on the size and needs of your website. Below you will find a brief description and a link to more information on each

  • Shared Web Hosting - Shared hosting plans allow many clients to share the resources of a single server. This makes these plans economical, and perfect for the small to medium sized website, or those just starting out. Review our shared hosting plans.
  • Virtual Private Servers - A virtual private server allows one server to host multiple "virtual servers" - allowing clients the access and power of a dedicated server, at a far lower price.
  • Dedicated Servers - This is essentially renting an entire web server solely for your own use. This option allows for the greatest flexibility and power, and is best suited to large and/or specialized sites.
  • Clustered Servers - Multiple servers are connected to perform as one 'super-server' to handle a single site. Clustered servers can service the most demanding high-traffic websites.
